The videogames of Tetsuya Mizuguchi have chased a singular, mystical effect—one the celebrated designer first experienced 30 years ago, in 1988, when he wandered into an arcade in Tokyo. A young college student at the time, Mizuguchi enjoyed the shooters and racing games but was mesmerized by a colorful, musical waterfall of 2-D blocks. “I put many coins into that machine,” Mizuguchi remembers. “It was such elegant perfection.”

Imagine if you were to visualize all of humanity’s connections. It’s a nearly impossible challenge, and two dimensional graphs certainly wouldn’t be up to the task. Even a network graph, a type of visualization that maps out connections in a network, isn’t up to such a large-scale project–since it can’t show how relationships change over time.

Cities are in a constant state of flux as new neighborhoods are developed, gentrification quickly changes areas and demographics, and people come and go. There are few cities where the old and the new live side by side quite as much as in London, where narrow streets filled with Victorian housing sit next to gigantic, glass-covered tech towers. For the third iteration of the city’s Art Night, the focus is fittingly on the idea of "home," based on the context of the local area: South London’s South Bank, Battersea Power Station, Vauxhall and Nine Elms.
